The annual iPubs vs St George’s College fixture took place this year on Saturday June 20th on the excellent grass courts at the College and we were delighted to be back after last year’s fixture was unfortunately cancelled.
The iPubs team, all made up of Old Georgians to add some drama to the fixture, arrived at St George’s promptly at 9:30am for a 10am start, minus 1 or 2 of the Bigwood Brothers. Following a bit of rejigging, due to the lack of a St George’s player (he heard about Mark’s deadly slice and felt it was a better idea to stay home), the matches got underway in an abbreviated format.
Charlie Lilley and Arthur Lander at first pair lost to a strong St George’s pair 6-4, aided by an array of double faults coming from the iPubs pair. Fin and Ronan Bigwood put in a stellar performance, alike to the Bryan Brothers, and came out strong with a 6-2 win, while Tom Nair and Mark Green sealed the tie winning 6-3 in their match.
Both teams then proceeded to eat hot dogs from the school BBQ and played a second round in the format of a friendly, with the iPubs and students mixing around to get even more tennis in on what was a lovely sunny day.
Overall, it was a lovely day on the grass and a strong 2-1 victory for the iPubs. We’d like to thank the College for their hospitality and very much looking forward to the 2027 fixture!
