IPSOBLTA v Bromsgrove School

  • Bromsgrove School Sports Centre Worcester Road Bromsgrove, England, B61 7DU United Kingdom (map)

The annual fixture against Bromsgrove School was played on Saturday 14th June. This year's iPubs team consisted of 4 Old Bromsgrovians.

The IPSOBLTA consisted of:

  • Paul Siviter

  • Nick Jones

  • Paul Cowie

  • Charles Hill

The iPubs knew this year's fixture would prove difficult, given that the School had just qualified for the National Schools Finals a few days before. Whilst the Bromsgrove School team had been training every day before the Saturday fixture, the iPubs team worked out that between them there had only been one visit to a tennis court that week!

After the first round, the fixture was in the balance, with Jones & Siviter beating the Bromsgrove School 2nd pair 6-4, 7-6, but the Bromsgrove School 1st pair defeated Cowie & Hill 6-4, 6-3. 1-1 after the first round.

The second round ebbed and flowed, with Cowie & Hill taking the first set against the Bromsgrove School 2nd pair, and Siviter & Jones taking a 3-0 lead in their match against the 1st pair. However, the situation soon changed, and Cowie & Hill found themselves in a Championship tie break 3rd set, whilst Siviter & Jones had lost the 1st set, and lost their break lead in the 2nd, to find themselves on the end of a 7-6, 6-4 defeat (2-1 to Bromsgrove School). Cowie & Hill took a 6-2 lead in the Champs tie-break, looking very promising to draw the tie overall, but the Bromsgrove School 2nd pair played an excellent run of points, which culminated in them edging the final set, and resulting in a Bromsgrove School overall victory for the first time in the fixtures 10 year history.

The match was enjoyed by all, with plenty of spectators watching on including the School Headmaster. The fixture was played in good spirits, as always, and it was finished off nicely with some pork baps and beers, which continues to be a tradition of the fixture. Thanks to Bromsgrove School and Director of Tennis, Richard Lawton for once again putting on a great fixture, and match supper. The iPubs will be looking for revenge next year!
